Road Trip Day 11 – On the road again, through Connecticut and back to New York

It was bittersweet to say so long to my two precious kids. But we had a great visit, just the right length, really, to catch up and hang out. They are both happy in their lives – although adulting is hard. We had breakfast together, then I hit the road.

I made a new friend, the lady who rents a room to my daughter. She and I had a lot in common, and I hope to keep in touch. We traded books and she gave me this:

I had planned a fairly short drive for today, so I could arrive a little early, and just enjoy chilling out. The drive was easy, and I arrived at my airbnb around 4. It is close to Goshen, NY- just perfect, with a lovely patio just for me. I picked up a couple of bottles of wine along the way, and plan to open one, and hang out here all evening.

Addendum: I was just finishing this post, and my host came out. She has chickens and a little garden, and gave me some eggs and fresh produce.

Road Trip Day 10 – Hanging out with the kids

My daughter got up early to make homemade vegan biscuits, to eat with apple butter from yesterday’s fun. They were delicious!

It was a gorgeous day, temp in the 50’s in the morning, so we set off for a short hike and sat by the Deerfield River for a bit. It was really great to be out in nature. So much beauty in this area! If it weren’t for the winters, and being far from grandbabies, I would want to live here.

We went a bit farther down the road, to Shelburne Falls, investigating the shops, not buying much, and then had a really delicious lunch at Hearty Eats.

Ricotto balls, mushroom soup, mixed fries – all delicious!

Then we enjoyed walking across the bridge of flowers. So beautiful!

We found Mo’s Candy store at the other end, and I got some fudge for the trip home – hopefully I won’t eat it all, and can share some with the husband when I get home!

We returned home and enjoyed a game of scrabble —-

I’m so glad I go to spend time with these children of mine, 2000 miles from home.

Road Trip Day 9: Shopping and Apple Picking

I had a good nights sleep, and enjoyed a leisurely cup of coffee “at home”. The morning was cool and the day promised to be clear and sunny.

We enjoyed a couple of hours in the morning browsing in an antique store.

After getting a delicious lunch at a local market, we went apple picking.

It was a wonderful day.

Road Trip Day 8 – Across Vermont, and finally, Massachussetts

I’ve driven 2400 miles in one week, and traveled through nine states.

I very happily arrived in western Massachusetts where my youngest two children live, grateful for the sights and experiences along the way. It was another rainy morning, but I had only 100 miles to go, and arrived in time for lunch, vegan sandwiches from a local shop. I’m so glad to see them.

I drove the back roads through the Green Mountain National Forest, thrilled by the changing fall colors.

We got sandwiches from a great shop for lunch, then hung out and enjoyed catching up and being together. My youngest rents a room, and her landlady invited me to sleep on the daybed in her upstairs room, an offer I gratefully accepted.

In the evening, my daughter went off on a previously planned commitment, and I had time alone with my other child and their partner, and enjoyed a delicious vegetable soup with pasta and tofu.

Me and my awesome Lavender
Me and my daughter Carol Anne.

I look forward to being here for the next couple of days, with these beautiful people.

Road Trip Day 7 – Niagara Falls and across New York State

Words and even pictures cannot capture the majesty of Niagara Falls. I had planned to go to Cave of the Winds, but after I spent an hour gazing on the Falls , and walking in the rain, I decided that I didn’t need to. I had gone on the Maid of the Mist 12 years ago and would love to do it again, but I knew that if I were to get to my next destination, I would have to get on the road.

If I’m close to a body of water, I have to go see it. I lived in an apartment with a view of a lake for four years and loved it. Only moved to be near the grandbabies. Thus, I took the more scenic and longer route so I could say hello to Lake Ontario.

After I found the park by Lake Ontario in Williamson, New York, I decided I’d better get back on the interstate or I’d be driving til midnight. It was rainy all day, but traffic wasn’t as bad as yesterday. When I was about 30 minutes from the airbnb I was aiming for, I got back on highway 5 to enjoy the last bit of my drive. I love looking at the old houses, driving through the towns, and crossing rivers. I was amazed that there were miles and miles, acres and acres of apple orchards that came right up to the road! So tempting, but I didn’t stop.

Fall colors are everywhere! Although most of the trees are still green, and the grass is a vivid green, yellows and oranges abound, and there are more and more streaks of red. Fall flowers in red, yellow, and purple beautify the roadside. I hope to get some pictures in the next couple of days.

Tonight I’m in a comfortable apartment all to myself, attached to a house, in Clifton Park, NY. Tomorrow, I arrive at my final destination, where I will stay for three nights before turning homeward.
