Uninspired

I’ve felt uninspired lately.

I haven’t even been journaling as much. I sit to write and it sounds like the same stuff over and over. Additionally, I haven’t been making much time to read other blogs, even though there are several writers I really enjoy. On top of that, I haven’t painted or taken many pictures lately. Everything just seems sorta blah.

Every so often I’ll get on wordpress, read a few posts, and wonder how people write so much, some every day. I periodically wonder why I started a blog in the first place. Oh yeah! I thought I had something to say that was inspiring. Then I got all into Blogging 101 and Photography 101 and following other blogs and hoping people would follow mine. Now I look at the list of blogs I follow and I don’t have time to read all that.  I’m not getting new followers lately — but hey! I haven’t been writing much. Would just like the stats to say woohoo! you’ve reached xxxx followers.

Sigh. That’s bullshit. That’s no reason to write, or paint, or any other pursuit.  If, in the course of writing, I put something out there and someone truly finds inspiration, great. If not, I’ve expressed myself. This is what all the great writers and painters say- do it for yourself first. So if I don’t have anything for awhile, that’s ok. I’ll read and study and travel, and be curious about everything.

So. New resolution. Stop being so concerned about putting up a blog post for the sake of putting up a blog post.  And when in the course of  the journey of life inspiration comes, go for it, in whatever form it takes.

  1. Love this! Very well said, Sara. You’re so right that sometimes our muse is quiet. I think as bloggers, we pressure ourselves to be a font of inspiration every time we sit at a keyboard. But I think the real trick is to do what you did here today – just get real and write what’s in your heart. I found it inspiring. Thanks for that!

  2. I understand and have a great deal of empathy for where you’re at Sara. Last evening at my writers’ group meeting the conversation fell into the same old bitches and complaints. And I sighed and wondered why I was there. Sometimes we need to regroup, refocus, re…why we write.
The acclamation is nice…but at the end of the day we should write for ourselves.
One of the fellows in my writers group has a contract with Penguin Books. He is writing a series…four books.
I leaned over at one point as he is struggling and inquired as to how being under contract was affecting his creativity. His reply was rather telling
So write for the love of it Sara. Paint because the colours, as is your wild imagination, are speaking to you and snap a photo because you want to capture a moment and hold it in your heart forever. You can’t be ‘on’ all the time. There in an ebb and flow to everything. I look forward to your future work and the insight you’ll bring.

  3. Exactly! It should be something you feel compelled to say or show, something with a life of its own, and fun! Relax and the things you love will exert themselves with their stories!

  4. This is exactly how I’ve been feeling for a couple of weeks now. I enjoy writing and sharing my photos but suddenly I lost inspiration. I’ve been taking some time off but I hope to come back again with more to share.
